Makhabeleni Bulk Water Supply Scheme
This rural water supply project is located within the extreme terrain of the uThukela valley, in Umzinyathi DM. The project will ultimately supply some 30 000 rural indigents. The project started in 2004, and expected completion of the Umzinyathi works is 2014. Raw water is abstracted from the uThukela River, and pumped via an abstraction tower and bridge to a 4Ml WTW on the southern banks of the uThukela River. The treatment processes include pre-settlement, flocculation, clarification, RG filtration and chlorination. From the WTW bulk water is pumped to a high level command reservoir, and thence gravity fed to the outlying reticulation reservoirs.
